More consumers in good standing on their credit records

The National Credit Regulator released the Consumer Credit Market report and the Credit Bureau Monitor for the quarter ending March 2018 last week.

Key observations:

  • General observations

    • Credit active consumers held on bureaus now 25.46 million
    • Consumers in good standing now on 15.77 million ( 61.93%)
    • New credit granted to consumers decreased by 10.38%
    • New credit granted was R121.62 billion
    • Total outstanding consumer credit balances ( gross debtors book) standing on R1.78 trillion
  • Quarterly comparison (Q1 2018 compared to Q4 2017)

    • Value of new mortgages granted decreased by R5.94 billion (14.36% )
    • Secured credit (dominated by vehicle finance) decreased by R4.89 billion (10.54%)
    • Credit facilities decreased by R788.09 million (4.5%)
    • Unsecured credit decreased by R1.84 billion (7.34%)
  • Annual comparison ( year ending March 2018 compared to year ending March 2017)

    • Value of new mortgages granted increased by R1.13 billion (3.29%)
    • Secured credit increased R2.66 billion (6.86%)
    • Credit facilities increased by R1.4 billion (9.11%) year-on-year
    • Unsecured credit increased by R3.16 billion (15.75%)
